Chula Vista Pride
Dear Rita Mae
Brown,
On this
Saturday I went to the Chula Vista Pride. The sun was shining and the ocean was
lapping a hello alongside the park grounds where it was held.
It was much,
much smaller than the San Diego Pride, but I enjoyed the same welcoming
atmosphere there. On a stage, between musicians, they did a little ceremony of
a couple of ladies that were married. I don’t know if that was their official
wedding or just a commemorative thing, but it was touching.
They were a
cute couple, not in the traditional way of the image we carry for “what makes
women cute”. They were cute in the “crazy about each other and it shows” kind
of way. One of them is in the Navy. It was very cool to hear that announced and
the cheers that followed. I cheered. It made my heart proud of the progress we
are making and honored to be there to witness it.
For the
future, I hope there comes a time when we can all cheer for blessings and
accomplishments like a cure for cancer, or a marvelous feat, instead of simple
acknowledgement of basic human rights. “Yay, aren’t we grand. We will no longer
discriminate against our men and women willing to risk their lives for our
country.” Something is wrong with this picture. There is something very Hunger
Games about it.
Sorry to be
so cynical.
Reasons to
cheer and rejoice…because we are here together and that’s a good thing, because
the sun is shining and the flowers are blooming, because we are strong and wise
and brave…because we want to.
Cheers,
Loraine
