Dear Rita May Brown,

April contained an onslaught of all that impacts us in life, both daily trials and life changes, setbacks and progress. One family member lost a job, while another relative of a friend lost her life. A new friend drew near, offering support through repercussions. An author I respect complimented my work. I found it difficult to celebrate accomplishments and blessings while simultaneously offering and accepting condolences.

An emotional tug of war makes the journey to happy ever after a jagged trail. This is where we set aside the analysis of pros and cons, stop evaluating the good vs the bad. And above all else, don’t ask “why?” That one little question can drive a person mad in the quest to find a suitable response. When the world close to home turns in a tumultuous tide, it is time to concentrate on putting one foot in front of the other.

I reach for the silver lining and chant “It’s all good.” There is a better tomorrow out there for all of us, wherever our souls may be flying off to. Perhaps this is where my writing differs from the works of those that have found the way. Rather than offering instructions or the proper process to prosperity, I’m saying there is something more out there, or inside ourselves, something special. I’m saying I know the quest to find it is not always easy, yet together our combined strengths will see us through.

Dear Rita Mae Brown,

Today I began re-reading Gerri Hill’s Dawn of Change and short fiction entries on her website. I jotted her a quick note to thank her for writing so many engaging novels. This one is a particular favorite of mine. She responded that there is a new book due out in July titled The Midnight Moon. Neat.

In an effort to post more often and be less wordy, that’s it for now. The relevance of it lay in that I think she has something to say, showing us life from a less common perspective. There is a casualness about her characters that I like, a variety of universal truths in her stories and a degree of insight about our connection to nature in her novels. It is evident more than ever that our written worlds and words are important as we all travel this path together, discovering one another.

Dear Rita Mae Brown,

Today Teddy wrote to me “Thank you for being in my life. Just being there to listen makes a difference.” As I struggle with boys, my trio of nephews, who give in to the dark side, stealing, lying and being disrespectful, I wonder how we can help them and what it is we are not hearing.

As a worldwide community of souls that continue to injure one another or ignore suffering, is our behavior a cry for help? Could the answer be as simple as listening to one another? How big of a difference would it make and how little of an effort would it take?

It’s a thought.
