Sharing and Happy Returns
Dear Rita Mae
Brown,
This weekend
Kate Forbes began reading me Pawing through the Past, the 8th
novel in the Mrs. Murphy mystery series, as I completed my errands. Audio books
double reading time. Harry keeps me company by riding along while I hear the
story of her days.
Fall has
touched down on Southern California. The skies are grey and the temps are
finally in the low 80s. This week I experienced the thrill of a desert
lightning storm between two warm days. It was thrilling because I had someone
to share it with, someone who reassured me at midnight that “It’s only lightning”
after a round of earth shaking thunder woke me.
Anything shared
with a friend is more fun, more thrilling, less scary and awkward, whether
walking along a nature trail together, developing a new business plan, watching
a movie for over two hours or the sky light up for over three hours. The
Martian movie with Matt Damon is quite good by the way.
Here we arrive
at the thought of the day: sharing. We share our hours, our thoughts, our homes,
and the land we occupy. Comforting gestures one day journey into fond memories
for future days. Lessons related today, contribute to better decisions
tomorrow. What we send out returns.
These simple
laws of the universe are like the law of gravity. Yet, we forget them often. Never do we toss a bowling ball up and expect it to sail upwards like a helium
balloon. However often kindness eludes us and then we are amazed when we look
around at mankind’s ability to destroy one another and the earth.
A better
tomorrow unfolds when we share the best of ourselves today.
Many happy
returns,
Loraine
